The answer depends on where you’ll be operating the forklift. If you’re working on an active construction site, you’ll generally need a White Card as well as the appropriate forklift licence. But if you’re working in a warehouse or distribution centre, the requirements are different.

Do Forklift Operators Need a White Card?
Yes. If you’re operating a forklift on an active construction site, you’ll generally need a White Card before you’re allowed on-site.
Under Australian workplace health and safety laws, anyone who carries out construction work, or who needs regular access to a construction site for work purposes, must complete general construction induction training. Once completed, you’ll receive your White Card.
However, if you’re driving a forklift inside a warehouse, factory, distribution centre or retail facility, a White Card is usually not required because these workplaces are not classified as construction sites. In other words, it’s not the forklift that determines whether you need a White Card, it’s where you’re using it.
A Forklift Licence VS a White Card

A forklift licence is a high-risk work licence that authorises you to operate certain types of forklifts. It’s issued after completing nationally recognised training and assessment.

In these situations, you’ll generally need both a valid forklift licence and a White Card. Your forklift licence allows you to legally operate the machine, while your White Card demonstrates you’ve completed the required construction safety training and are permitted to work on an active construction site.
It’s common for employers and labour hire companies to ask to see both qualifications before you start work, so having them organised ahead of time can help you get on-site sooner.
When Isn’t a White Card Required?

- major repairs and alterations.
If you’re operating a forklift to support any of these activities, you’ll almost certainly need a White Card.
For example, delivering pallets of bricks to an active housing development or moving steel beams around a commercial construction project would typically require both a forklift licence and a White Card.
What If you’re Only Making Deliveries?
Delivery drivers and forklift operators often assume they don’t need a White Card because they’re only on-site for a short time. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.
If your job requires you to enter an active construction site and unload materials yourself, the principal contractor may require you to hold a White Card.
Some sites have designated delivery zones where drivers can remain outside the active construction area. In those cases, a White Card may not be necessary.
