What is a White Card in SA?

Also known as a general construction induction card, a White Card in SA shows you’ve completed the mandatory safety training required to carry out construction work in South Australia.

To get one, you must successfully complete the nationally recognised CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to work safely in the construction industry course through an authorised registered training organisation (RTO). The training covers essential safety knowledge, including how to recognise hazards, understand workplace responsibilities and respond to incidents.

In South Australia, White Card requirements fall under the state’s work health and safety legislation and are overseen by SafeWork SA.

Once issued, your White Card is generally recognised across Australia, meaning you won’t ordinarily need to complete the training again simply because you work interstate.

Who needs a White Card in South Australia?

Anyone carrying out construction work in South Australia generally needs a valid White Card. This includes people working in roles such as:

  • Builders, carpenters, electricians and plumbers.
  • Construction labourers and apprentices.
  • Civil construction and roadwork personnel.
  • Demolition and excavation workers.
  • Site supervisors and project managers who carry out construction work.
  • Other workers whose duties involve construction activities.

A White Card may also be required for people who regularly enter active construction areas as part of their work. However, not every visitor automatically needs one. Requirements depend on the nature of the visit, the activities being undertaken and the site’s safety arrangements.

A White Card is also not a substitute for site-specific induction training, which may be required before you begin work at a particular location.

What are the White Card requirements in SA?

To complete White Card training in South Australia, you’ll need to enrol with a registered training organisation (RTO) authorised to deliver the course.

You’ll also need to provide acceptable identification and have a Unique Student Identifier (USI), unless you’re exempt. Students enrolling with National White Card Courses must be at least 14 years old.

You’ll need sufficient English language and literacy skills to understand the safety information, participate in training and complete the required assessments.

These include demonstrating both your knowledge and practical safety skills. If you have any concerns about your language or learning needs, it’s worth contacting your training provider before booking to discuss available support.

You don’t need previous construction experience or formal qualifications to enrol, making White Card training an accessible first step for people entering the industry.

What identification do you need for a White Card in SA?

Before commencing White Card training in South Australia, you’ll need to provide acceptable identification so your registered training organisation (RTO) can verify your identity and issue your training records correctly.

Depending on the provider’s requirements, this may include an Australian driver’s licence, Australian passport, foreign passport with supporting identification, or a government-issued photo ID such as a proof-of-age card.

You may need to provide additional documents if your identification doesn’t meet the provider’s requirements or your name differs between records. It’s worth checking exactly what you’ll need before attending your course to avoid any delays.

What does White Card training involve in South Australia?

White Card training covers the basic knowledge and practical skills needed to work safely in construction. The nationally recognised CPCWHS1001 course addresses four main areas:

  • Work health and safety responsibilities: Understanding safety laws, worker obligations and duty of care.
  • Construction hazards and risk controls: Identifying common hazards such as working at heights, electrical risks, moving machinery and hazardous substances.
  • Safety communication and reporting: Recognising safety signs, reporting hazards and understanding workplace safety documentation.
  • Emergency procedures: Knowing how to respond to incidents, access first aid and identify emergency equipment.

The assessment includes knowledge-based questions, verbal or written responses and practical demonstrations.

You’ll also need to demonstrate how to correctly fit and use personal protective equipment (PPE), including a hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection and high-visibility clothing.

Can you get a White Card online in SA?

White Card training may be available through different delivery formats, including face-to-face classes or virtual training arrangements.

However, it’s important to distinguish between a legitimate, nationally recognised course and an online provider that doesn’t meet the relevant training and assessment requirements.

The CPCWHS1001 unit requires practical assessment, including direct observation of participants demonstrating their safety skills. This can occur in person or through real-time audio and visual assessment where permitted.

National White Card Courses offers face-to-face White Card training in Adelaide, allowing participants to complete their training and practical assessment with an experienced trainer.
